The Mopria Alliance exists for the primary purpose to select, develop and promote technologies which enable the seamless use of mobile print across multiple vendors, encourage the adoption of mobile print technology, and promote the use of mobile printing. Members can have a significant influence over how the technology is designed and implemented by participating in the development of the Alliance specifications.

The Mopria Alliance has been formed as a Delaware non-profit membership corporation and plans to operate as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit corporation advancing the common business interest of promoting simple, convenient, widespread use of mobile printing by removing lack of interoperability and confusion in the market—all benefitting the end user. Representatives from member organizations can serve on the Board of Directors and the three primary working groups: Technical, Certification and Marketing (depending upon membership level).

The Mopria Alliance has a Steering Committee to address the daily affairs of the Alliance and to provide oversight and direction to the three Working Groups: Technical, Certification, and Marketing.

• The Technical Working Group is responsible for the selection and development of the technologies to enable the Mopria Alliance vision of interoperability (all apps, any device, OS, printer and ecosystem) and simple, intuitive user experience.


• The Certification Working Group is responsible for developing testing and compliance policy, and interoperability requirements.


• The Marketing Working Group will be primarily responsible for building equity in the Mopria brand to support vendor communications of their Mopria Certified products. The Marketing committee also provides customer insights and product marketing support for the Mopria Alliance standards roadmap, supports member communications and manages marketing funds in furtherance of the Mopria Alliance’s goals.

General members have access to certification and use of the Alliance trademarks. Executive, Seated Executives and Founder’s may nominate a representative to the Board, have voting rights and can chair Working Groups.

The Mopria Alliance bi-laws allows for any organization interested in using or participating in the selection and development of standards are welcome to join at the Executive, General Member and Adopter levels.

The Mopria Alliance encourages all member companies to participate actively. To gain the most value, join the groups working in the topic areas that are important to your company. Alliance will hold bi-monthly member meetings and the Working Groups will be meeting at least monthly. Executive and Seated Executive members are asked to take a leading role, which may range from Working Group leadership to reviewing and commenting on materials. Each member is also asked to promote Mopria and the Mopria standards in their specific company & product communications and websites.

The Alliance creates opportunities for members to showcase products and services in programs such as group appearances at trade shows, links from the Mopria website to member sites, speaking opportunities at industry events, mentions in press releases as appropriate to our non-profit status.

Review the governing documents and benefits for different member classes. Complete and sign the Membership Agreement and submit along with the on-line application. Applications for membership levels will be granted upon receipt of a completed application form, signed agreement to the IPR policy, and payment.

It is a testament to the need for mobile printing that Google has incorporated print into the Android Operating System (OS) version 4.4 (KitKat). With the breadth of members and technological prowess, the Mopria Alliance is well positioned to complement and innovate on top of the basic print feature deployed in the Android OS. For example, we have launched a Mopria standards-based print plug-in for Android OS 4.4 (available on the Google Play Store), supporting Alliance member’s brands of printers. Mopria's plug-in will enable KitKat devices to print to any Mopria 1.0 compliant printer. It can save printer vendors from having to individually develop their own plug-ins. And, to achieve the user experience goal of driverless (no downloads) printing, the Alliance will seek the pre-load of the Mopria Print Service in Android mobile devices.

The Mopria Alliance is a non-profit membership organization formed by leading global technology companies with the goal of providing simple wireless printing from smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices. The Alliance developed the Mopria mark so users will only need to look for this designation to know that their devices are mobile print ready.

The Mopria Alliance was formed to advance wireless printing from smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices by creating a standard that enables printing to be universally compatible and consistently easy for users.

The founding members of the Mopria Alliance are Canon, HP, Samsung, and Xerox.

The Mopria Alliance owns some elements and influences other components referenced in the Alliance technology standards. The Alliance defines the customer use cases and the technology requirements; then reviews existing standards to meet these requirements. Our initial selection of technologies includes standards from the Wi-Fi Alliance, The Printer Working Group, NFC Forum and additional standards bodies. Mopria Alliance members participate on these technology standards organizations and support Mopria-specific implementation requirements regarding mobile and print device interoperability.

The Mopria Alliance then influences mobile & printer manufacturers, OS and software providers to adopt the Mopria-defined customer use cases and technology outcomes utilizing technologies from existing standards organizations.

As the Mopria Alliance expands customer use cases, we may create new technologies and establish new standards as needed.

Customers want to print from their mobile devices. Unfortunately, today’s methods to print are frequently too complicated for the user, have limited support in business by IT, and are too difficult for the manufacturers of mobile devices and software apps to adopt. Driving a single standard solves these problems and creates a baseline experience that allows for new innovation at the intersection of mobile and printing devices.

We are not aware of any other industry consortia that are driving an interoperable mobile print solution across manufacturers of mobile devices and printers, OS providers and software application developers.
There are existing and proprietary technology solutions and applications available today that enable printing on specific products or in specific environments.

The Mopria set of standards helps make printing from smartphones, tablets and mobile devices even simpler than traditional PC-based printing. All participating manufacturers will execute a single set of printing standards. All customers need do is look for the Mopria mark to know that they can instantly and easily wirelessly print from their mobile devices to identified printers without additional set up procedures.

The standards offer the following benefits to consumers/business customers:

• No complicated set up required – devices are print ready the moment you start using them

Eventually the basic Mopria print functionality will be embedded in their phone, tablet or other mobile device; there will be no set-up required. In the meantime, we have provided the technology as an app for download the Mopria Alliance website or on Google Play for users to upgrade their currently owned Android mobile devices. Consumers will need a Mopria-certified printer or access to one.

Yes, there is growing evidence supporting the need for mobile printing, a trend that will continue to rise if consumers have their way. Research suggests that consumers still prefer to read documents in print, despite the strong growth in mobility. According to InfoTrends, 95% of consumers and 67% of business users desire to print from their mobile devices.
